Authority: Robb Moser
Genesis to Revelation Bible Blogs
Biblical authority originates from God, who is the supreme ruler of the universe. Scripture is considered the inspired, ultimate, and objective standard for faith and conduct. Believers are called to submit to God, Jesus Christ, and, in most cases, governing authorities, which are established by Him.
Key Aspects of Authority in the Bible:
God’s Ultimate Authority: God is the source of all power and authority, as He is the creator and sustainer of life.
Jesus Christ’s Authority: Jesus declared that “all authority in heaven and on earth” was given to him. He demonstrated authority over nature, demons, disease, and to forgive sins.
Scripture’s Authority: The Bible is seen as God’s inspired, breathed-out word, making it the final authority for Christians.
Delegated Authority: God delegates authority to humans (e.g., government, church leaders, parents).
Submission to Authority: Romans 13:1-2 instructs believers to submit to governing authorities, as they are established by God. However, if earthly authority violates God’s commands, obedience to God takes precedence.
Accountability: Those in positions of authority are accountable to God for how they exercise their power.
Examples of Authority:
Government: Paul instructs in Romans 13 that no authority exists except from God, and resisting them is resisting God’s ordinance.
The Church: Leaders are called to teach and admonish with authority (Titus 2:15).
Spiritual Realm: Jesus gave his disciples authority to overcome the enemy (Luke 10:19).
While authority is to be respected, the Bible also highlights the danger of its abuse and calls for it to be used justly.
