John Newton (1725–1807) was an English Anglican clergyman, hymn writer, and abolitionist. He is known for composing the “Amazing Grace” hymn. Newton worked in the Atlantic slave trade, becoming a captain of slave ships. His spiritual transformation began during a severe storm at sea in 1748.
